If you’ve been putting off your oil expansion because threading pipes across half a continent makes you want to close the game, Update 1.2 is the patch you’ve been waiting for. Coffee Stain didn’t just tweak fluids, they handed us a whole new way to move them. After a couple hundred hours of fighting head lift and watching pipes gurgle to a halt, I’ve rebuilt three fluid networks around the 1.2 systems. Here’s everything I wish I’d known before I started.

First, what actually changed

Update 1.2 is the first big post-launch content drop, and while it touched a lot (a weather system, a full Game Modes menu with world randomization, a vehicle pathing rework, and an engine bump to Unreal Engine 5.6.1), the headline for factory builders is fluid transport. The star is the new Fluid Truck Station and its Tanker Truck, unlocked at Tier 5. Instead of stretching pipelines across ravines and cliffs, you pump liquid into a station, let a tanker fill up, and have it drive the fluid to a station somewhere else entirely. Each trip hauls up to 3,200 cubic meters of liquid.

That 3,200 number matters more than it looks. It means fluid logistics finally works the way item logistics always has: decouple production from consumption, buffer in between, and stop caring about the terrain in the middle.

When to truck and when to pipe

Here’s the honest tradeoff, because trucking is not a universal upgrade. Pipes give you continuous, predictable throughput. A Pipeline Mk.1 moves 300 cubic meters a minute and a Mk.2 moves 600, flowing every second of every minute. A tanker route delivers in bursts: a big slug of fluid arrives, then nothing until the truck loops back.

That burst pattern is fine, even great, when you buffer it. Drop an Industrial Fluid Buffer at the receiving station and your machines drink steadily from the tank while the truck is away. Trucking wins hard when you’re crossing nasty terrain (if a pipe run needs six pumps to climb a plateau, a road and a tanker save you hours and a chunk of your power budget), when you’re tapping a remote resource node on the far side of the map, or when you’re making occasional bulk moves to an outpost you only top up now and then.

Piping still wins in dense, high-throughput industrial cores where machines sit close together and you want uninterrupted flow. Don’t truck fluid 200 meters between two buildings. That’s using a freight train to mail a postcard.

The head-lift rules people still get wrong

Even with trucks in the game, you’ll pipe fluids constantly, and the number-one reason networks stall is a misunderstanding of head lift. Let me save you the debugging session. First: head lift does not stack. A Pipeline Pump Mk.1 gives you 20 meters of lift and a Mk.2 gives you 50. Slam two Mk.2 pumps right next to each other expecting 100 meters and you get 50 and a headache. Pumps need vertical distance between them to each do their job, so space them out along the climb.

Second, and this is the big one: pumps raise pressure, not flow. A pump lets fluid climb higher, but it does not increase how much fluid moves through the pipe. If your line is already at its 300 or 600 ceiling, adding pumps does nothing for throughput. You need a second pipe or a Mk.2 upgrade for that.

Third: even flat pipes need a little lift. A perfectly horizontal pipeline still needs about 1.3 meters of head lift just to fill completely, which is why a dead-flat run sometimes refuses to fully saturate. Nudge the source slightly higher or add a pump at the start. And fourth: junction crosses split your flow. Feed one source into a Pipeline Junction Cross and each output keeps the input’s head lift but divides the flow rate. Split a 600 line four ways and each branch gets 150, not 600. Plan your manifolds around that.

One last trick: if you want a clean vertical climb, run the pipe straight up rather than at a diagonal. Head-lift guide rings sometimes vanish early on diagonal runs, and going perfectly vertical is the most reliable way to hit a pump’s full rated lift.

A power warning before you wire in stations

One thing the patch notes bury: Fluid Truck Stations pull real power when they pump fluid in and out under pressure. Splice a bank of them into an already-tight grid and you can trip a brownout the first time three tankers dock at once. Budget extra headroom (I keep a dedicated power buffer near any station cluster) before you wire them into a live network. It’s a five-minute fix now or a very confusing blackout later.

My go-to 1.2 fluid loop

Here’s the setup that’s been rock-solid across my saves. At the source, run the extractor into a small buffer and then into a Fluid Truck Station set to load; the buffer smooths extraction so the tanker always has a full load waiting. On the road, start with one dedicated tanker per route and add a second only once you confirm one truck can’t keep the destination buffer topped up. At the destination, unload the station into an Industrial Fluid Buffer before it feeds your machines; that big buffer is what turns bursty deliveries into smooth consumption.

The trick to tuning it is to watch the buffer, not the truck. If the destination buffer trends toward empty over an hour, add a truck or a second station. If it stays pinned full, you’re over-supplied and can pull a truck for another route. Dial that in and you’ll wonder how you ever tolerated a pump every 20 meters.

The bigger picture

What I appreciate about 1.2 is that it respects the way your factory grows. Fluid transport gates behind Tier 5, arriving right when your logistics ambitions outgrow hand-built pipe runs, so the tech unlocks when you’re ready to use it rather than dumping everything on you at once. That kind of pacing (the right tool at the right moment) is exactly the sort of thoughtful progression design more games should steal.
